The Zee's Tee - Bundle UP Boys

Today I am part of the Bundle UP! Boys edition pattern tour and I had the chance to make a Zee's Tee, pattern by Tie Dye Diva!
The Bundle UP is a collective of talented PDF pattern designers coming together to offer an amazing deal on a bundle of all-new pdf patterns for boys!! (Although some, if not all, can also be sewn for girls - just use your creativity to make them more girly girl! :) ) You can find it here! And hurry - it will be on sale only from August 22-29!

Bundle UP

My local fabric store doesn't have many knits. So, when I find any I always add some to my stash. This one is a (double-faced) French terry that I have found sometime ago in the remnants bin, but you can use jersey, interlock, thermal, rib knit, as long as it has a minimum of 25% of stretch.
I also have this exact same knit in pink (with pink stripes) so I see a girly girl's Zee's Tee in my near future. :) (Yes, I am one of those moms who likes to dress their kids matchy-matchy...)

This pattern has several options - pocket tee, yoke tee or colorblock tee, and two sleeve lengths (short or long). I have opted for the pocket tee with long sleeves. Although around here summer usually lasts until October this boy has outgrown almost all of his long sleeve tees so this mom here needs to sew a ton more before the cold weather arrives. :)

Instead of hemming by folding the edges to the inside I have folded them to the outside (both at the bottom and at the sleeves) to make them contrasting. I love the way the stripes show onto the green color block side and vice-versa. Then I have sewn just a few stitches right at the side seams ("stitch in the ditch") to keep the hems rolled to the outside (again both at the bottom and at the sleeves).

I have used the measurement chart to choose which size to sew and the fit is spot on!

If you have never sewn with knits this is such a great pattern to adventure yourself! It is a super quick sew! The instructions are clear and easy to follow and they include two pages with great tips for sewing with knits.

This pattern is perfect as it is but I have decided to add elbow patches! And I thought I would share with you a simple and super quick tutorial on how to add elbow patches to any tee's or shirt's pattern.

Tutorial - how to add elbow patches to any pattern in two simple steps!

Step 1 - Make the elbow patch pattern piece

You can do this by two very simple ways:
  •  Using a pins magnet - I always love to find new uses for sewing objects! :) Just trace all around with a pencil. This patch will be suitable for smaller sizes.
  • Or use a glass! You have to trace two partial overlapped circles and draw two lines, one on each side. This patch is bigger than the previous.
Of course you can use any other oval shape object you have around. :)
Trace the patch pattern to the patch fabric and cut (two pieces). Optional: you can apply fusible interfacing.

Step 2 - Placing and Sewing
Fold the two sleeve pieces (just the cut fabric, not yet sewn) in half and press to create a crease (in the middle). Unfold. You now have a center line.
Place the patches over the sleeves pieces onto the back part of the sleeve (I have marked the front half with a pin at the top - can you see it?). You should place it at the center point (right next to the crease and half way between top and bottom).
Repeat for other sleeve piece, making sure both sleeves are mirrored images.
Sew around the edge with a small zig zag stitch or blanket stitch, for both patches.

You're done!

This is definitely a go-to t-shirt pattern to have in your pattern library!

Here is a preview of all the patterns on this great Bundle Up and don't forget they will only be for sale for ONE week starting this Friday!

The Sunny top

This is the Sunny top, a pattern by sewVery!
This pattern is available both in top or dress length, size ranging from to 2T to 12. It also features an open back with tied crisscrossed straps and has an option for a neck ruffle, both of which make this pattern so unique and totally adorable!

When I made this top we were already T-minus counting the days for our beach holiday trip so I decided to make the top length with the neck ruffle, in a kind of hawaian floral print double gauze - isn't it perfect for summer and the beach?
I must share a curiosity with you: this fabric is from a remnant bolt from SS2014 Zara's collection and is being sold along with several other fabric remnants at my local fabric store. How fun is that? (Marta from DoGuincho was also able to find another remnant fabric from Zara with a flamingo print and used it for this amazing Charlie dress here.)

I have to add that this pattern is also suitable for winter, to layer over shirts or blouses. If you don't believe it have a look on this winter version from my sewing friend Jenya over While She Was Sleeping!

This is Veronica's first fully graded pdf pattern and you wouldn't tell since it is so well done. The instructions are very clear and detailed - some of the best I have seen for a first-timer -, and it is a quick sew! This is a great pattern for beginners and - the best part - it has only 8 pattern page sheets to print! (How awesome is that?)

Thank you Veronica for having me in this pattern tour! The Sunny top and dress is definitely one of my favorites.
Here is the tour's schedule for more inspiration on looks and styles!

You can find the Sunny top and dress pattern at sewVery pattern shop

If you are wondering about the gorgeous skirt she is wearing (yet to be blogged), it's the Betty skirt from the amazing Shaffer Sisters! (Have you heard they are competing for season 10 of Project Run & Play? I can't wait to see what they are making... Good luck ladies!)

The Two Haute shorts

These are the Two Haute shorts and skorts! This is the third pattern from Lil Luxe Collection and you can find them here. They are the perfect girly girl pattern for active girls!

I have to say my girls are not much into shorts... But I think they are so practical, specially for Summer hot weather and for fun outside playing that I thought about making them skorts!

I love skorts! I think of them as shorts disguised as a skirt. :) I am sure my girls would love them! So, I started to search pdf patterns for skorts and I wasn't able to find any... I was about to start drafting my own (starting from a already existing shorts pattern) when I saw a tester call for... skorts! I was so excited! I couldn't believe it, what a perfect timming! And luckly I got to be one of the pattern testers!

I have used a very thin crisp denim (it is very lightweight) with a floral print that resembles crocheted or embroidered flowers.

The instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Jessica did a great job with the illustrations!
This pattern is available for sizes 2T-8.

It is actually a two-in-one pattern since you can make simple cuffed shorts or skorts with an edgy design!
Both options have pockets and the waistband is elasticized only at the back (I love flat front waistbands), and it is adjustable!

This skort is very comfortable and yet so stylish! My little girl loves it! I asked her "do you like your new shorts?" and she was "no mommy, these are not shorts! I have a pretty new skirt!" Mission accomplished! ;)

There is a 20% discount running for this pattern! Get it at the Lil Luxe Collection shop!

And if you are asking yourself about that blouse, it is from Zara Zippy (a Portuguese kids clothes brand. Thank you so much Rita for making me realize my mistake!) and I am working on drafting a pattern similar to this (not 100% though) so I can make it in several sizes. Isn't it cute?

Delilah top

I have just found one of my go-to wardrobe staples! The Delilah top - pattern by Golden Rippy - is a knit top that is sewn on a snap!

Pattern options

This top comes in six different sizes (XXS to XL) with two sleeve lengths and two embellishment options (both with pattern pieces and instructions) - bow or flowers. I opted for the short sleeve + shoulder bow and I love it!

Fabric details

I used a knit solid + floral combo. If you are not new here you already know how much I love floral prints. :) (If not, check my previous post and you will know what I mean... ;) )

What I love about this pattern

I love that it is a quick and super easy sew!
It took me less than one hour to make this top (+ 10 more minutes for the bow). And yet, it is so stylish and comfortable!
I also love that it is roomy at the waist - it hides my curvy mommy waist. ;)

And if your little girl wants to match mommy, you can make her the matching Dahlia top in her size! Isn't that so much fun? I will be making a mommy and me blog post soon with it!

Note: This pattern is absolutely beginner friendly! It is super easy and since it has drop sleeves there are no sleeve attachment steps!

What I will make different next time

According to the size chart I am in between sizes M and L so I opted for size L. Although I like that it is roomy I think next time I will make a size M and make it a bit shorter (I think it is supposed to hit at the hips but this one tends to stretch all the way down).

I am definitely adding this pattern to my go-to list of knit top patterns! (see the other three I love here, here and here) You can grab your copy here at a 25% sale price!

**Giveaway Alert!**
You can also enter this rafflecopter giveaway to win two patterns from Golden Rippy!
And there will be two winners! The giveaway ends at midnight PST on August 6th and winners will be announced the following day.

The Retro Rucksack

Today I am showing you my version of the Retro Rucksack as part of the Inspiration Tour. The Retro Rucksack is a pattern by Radiant Home Studio and you can find it here.

I sew mostly for my kids - and I love it! - but lately I have been craving to sew a different kind of projects. Lucky me, I was invited for this tour and I got to test another bag's pattern and a sweet fabric doll pattern. It felt great! I can tell you I have more non-clothing sewing projects to come in the near future! Maybe even a few free patterns... ;)

Well, back to the Retro Rucksack. As I am not used to sew bags this one was a bit of a challenge - and you already know how I love challenges! (Check my last post!) Although the existing instructions are clear I had to give some thought on a few intermediate steps - my mind was just not being able to follow through (oh well, maybe sewing at 2am didn't help... lol) -, but then it clicked and I got it done! And I have to say I am very pleased with the result! It is a great pattern and although it is not a quick sew it is worth the time spent.

Fabric and materials

I used a floral twill (that I had bought a few weeks ago to make a skirt or some shorts) and a rusty pink thin wale corduroy to match one of the floral tones. For the inside I have used a woven cotton on the same rusty pink tone. The straps are borwn poly webbing - my local haberdashery did not have any cotton webbing and this was the only color they had at the moment, it is not perfect but I ended up liking it.

The hardware for the bag was partially found on a local haberdashery and I also reused some from an old bag that was already set aside to go to the trash bin. I love when I can reuse things! And I learned to save all the hardware from old bags before I tossed them out. Nevertheless, Sara provides a lot of suggestions on different hardware that can be used and she also suggests some online stores where the hardware can easily be found.

Things I would change next time

And because I always love to tweak the pattern, next time I will make a few things differently. :) I will raise the placement of the inside zipper pocket and I will enclose the zipper seam / raw edges so they don't show when I open the bag (I can think of at least two ways of doing it).

Things I love

I am a bit OC about organization and I am tired of using bags where my stuff gets lost inside and I have to empty it to find my door keys... (You know what I mean, right? :) ) So, I love all the pockets in this pattern!

The recessed zipper adds a lovely different look to this rucksack and makes sure everything stays safely inside!

The inside patch pocket is big enough and sturdy enough (it is interfaced) to carry my netbook or a tablet. I can even imagine it as a DSLR camera pocket with the proper tweaking!

And I just love the vintage feel on this rucksack!
I have been amazed by what other people in this inspiration tour came up with! It is so much fun to see how many different fabrics one can use to make this and how they change the look of it. The one I love the most so far is this one made with knit! (Yes, knit! Isn't that genious? Tasha is one of the best, I just love everything she does!)

This bag had already lots of use since I made it (last weekend) on our outings to the beach this week! (Hello Summer! Living 15 minutes away from the beach is such a blessing!)
