The Laced Winter Wonderland cape

My winter wonderland is all about... snow! But unfortunately there is very little snow in my Country and none were I live (actually it only snowed two times were I live in my whole life... sad thing, isn't it?).

So, I can´t have snow but I can do something snow colored - white! And I can't have snowflakes but I can have small flowers print and lace - they remind me somehow of beautiful snowflakes!

This is the Laced Winter Wonderland cape!

This month is a busy one... Lots of fun sewing activities going on, series, challenges, sew-alongs... (as I posted here)
Honestly I want to join every single one of them! If only there were 48 hours in a day...

It came to my mind... What if... I can combine two of them? Sew something that could enter two of those sewing challenges? Project Run & Play - week 1, theme Winter Wonderland (going on here) + the wonderful Snowflakes & Lace sewing series (here).

This is a reversible cape with lace edge and a vintage button brooch.

I used a snow white wool fabric and a cotton lawn print (white flowers on black background).

The lace on the hood is black and is about 1 cm (3/8'') wide and the lace in the bottom is about 2 cm wide.

The cape closes with a velcro tab, but I think I will make a buttonhole instead - it will last longer!

The pattern is Maisie Cape from My Childhood Treasures (an online shop at Etsy). I bought it a few years ago but I never used it (I wonder if this happens just to me...). I have to say it is a simple perfect project for beginners. The original pattern doesn't have any lace but I just felt that I had to add it - doesn't it look sweet?

When I finished the cape I immediately thought "Humm... this closing tab needs something..." so I made this brooch with black and white lace and a vintage button from my stash - I love (LOVE) buttons!

My "Snow White Riding Hood" is very happy with her cape.
[I have to confess that sometimes I envy my kids - their wardrobe is better than mine! I may just sew one of this for myself...]

Small Fry Skinny Jeans by Titchy Threads

Those of you who follow me at Instagram know that I have been working on something very meaningful to me: I made my first jeans/trousers ever!

Laura from Titchy Threads patterns (aka Craftstorming) have this new AMAZING pattern - the Small Fry Skinny Jeans - and I was one of the testers.

I have a confession to make... Although I have been sewing clothing consistently now for a couple of years I have never ever tried to sew jeans/ trousers/ shorts/ pants... I was afraid! (Don't ask me why...)

So, although I have never tried any other jeans/trousers patterns I know now - after doing these jeans - that I won't be looking for any other pattern because this is (warning: I am going to repete myself...) AMAZING!

The finished garnment looks very professional! Not because of me (although I have to say I am very proud of myself on this one...) but because of the design put into this pattern. They are just like big brands's jeans. They look exactly like store bought jeans!

The pattern asked for denim or twill with a bit of stretch, but I have to say that being my first time sewing jeans AND my first time sewing denim I decided to play safe - I chose a thin corduroy with stretch and you know what? It worked GREAT! I really love the way these jeans look in corduroy.

The Small Fry Skinny jeans have severall options: full leg lenght or shorts lenght (which I tested), inset or patch pockets, waistband with or without topstitching, zipper fly or half fly.

The waistband is adjustable - I love that! And the 3T size was designed to have enough room for diapers - which I also loved since this toddler here still wears them...

I was also amazed by the instructions given with the pattern. They are so detailed and full of real pictures - which I always find to be very helpful. I felt at ease once I took a look through the pages (I always study the whole thing before I start sewing).

I am sorry for the not-great-at-all pictures but the weather here has been awfully dark, rainy and cold for the last days...

The good news is: the pattern has been released! You can find it here.

Now, I have to go. I am going to make one more pair of Small Fry Skinny jeans for my middle one and another one to my boy.

Obrigada!

Swing and Stella Skirts

Kaleidoscope Top (KCW Fall 2013)

Second project for KCW: two Kaleidoscope tops, pattern from See Kate Sew

Recently I have tested a new pattern from See Kate Sew, for her last collection - The Nostalgia collection, before it was released. I enjoyed it so much (see my post about it) that I bought the entire collection once it was released!
The Kaleidoscope was a favorite! I just love that bow (which is optional).

My daughter I. is starting her ballet classes this Friday, so I had to chose a ballet themed print for the bow! (I don't know who the designer is, so if you know please let me know! I would love that!)

And because I like to dress both girls alike, I had to make one Kaleidoscope top for R. too. This print from Riley Blake (from the Fly a Kite collection) was just perfect!

The pattern is very easy to sew. I think it is p-e-r-f-e-c-t for beginners.

Sewing knits is always a challenge to me, since I don't have a serger... But luckly my sewing machine has a stretch sewing mode and I also used an appropriate needle for knits (ball pointed), so that helped.

[I am sorry for the terrible photos but the weather was really cloudy and rainy today and I couldn't take pictures outside...]

Bubble Skirt (KCW Fall 2013)

I am so excited to be part of this season's Kids Clothing Week!

I was planning to join KCW for all last seasons but there was always something that kept me for having time and energy to go for it. So this is my first time ever at KCW!

I have been preparing this for two weeks now, going through patterns and pattern magazines and books. I think I have too many projects that I would like to sew through this week! [So many ideas so little time... Know the feeling?] Oh well, lets see how this goes - no pressures, I just want to have fun! That is the point of KCW, right?

So this is my first project for KCW Fall. A bubble skirt!

While I was searching for inspiration I looked through my fabric stash. Once I pulled this blue cotton with large white polka dots I knew it had to be used on a bubble skirt.

I drafted the pattern for this skirt - a basic skirt pattern with a bit more width and length (I will try to put it on paper as a free pattern, once I figure out how to turn a pattern into a pdf file...). It turned to be a bit too large for my skinny 4 year-old (as you may notice from the picture above). I guess she will only be wearing it next Spring!

I added a few details to this basic pattern, such as: an adjustable waistband (I found it really easy to do), piping and a fabric flower on the side.

This KCW is just starting, so I am off to my next project! See you!
