The Fat Quarter Skirt

Hi! I just found the perfect pattern for people who - just like me - don't have much time to sew or need a quick & easy & cute gift for girls. It's the Fat Quarter Skirt by Thread Riding Hood. It only takes 2 fat quarters of fabric! And it's the perfect sewing fix for this sleepy mom of a baby, who doesn't have much time to sew these days...

I have already shared on social media how sad / frustrated I feel for not having much time to sew since baby #4 was born. My sewing mojo was low at the time (it was low for most of last year actually...) but now that it came back I just want to sew.all.things but I don't find the time... Or I don't have a long time slot to do it... I have always been the kind of sewist who loves to pick up a project and take it all the way to the end in a few hours (or in one day at most). Now with my baby I only have a few little stretches of time to sew now and then and that usually just puts me off sewing because I can't cope with not seeing the finished piece on that same day... I really need to make a shift on my brain and just start doing little things at a time... 10 minutes of free time? Print the pattern. 15 minutes of free time 3 hours later? Cut the fabric. Another 15 minutes free? Read through the instructions and gather the notions. And then just leave it for tomorrow... How do you do it? Do you make one project in one day or during several days?

Well, when Sherri (Thread Riding Hood) asked for people to join her Fat Quarter Skirt pattern tour I hesitated because I know my time is now very limited but then I thought that this could be the perfect pattern for my little stretches of sewing time. And it is!
Also, before I started to make garments I used to make smaller projects (like pouches, mug rugs, etc.) so I have a stash of quilting cottons that I don't use anymore because I usually don't use quilting cotton for garments and because I only have fat quarters. :) This is indeed the perfect pattern to use up all those FQ laying around!

Pattern:
Fat Quarter Skirt pattern by Thread Riding Hood.

Fabric:
2 fat quarters of quilting cotton per skirt. (A fat quarter is a piece of fabric of 18'' x 21-22'' or 46cm x 53-56cm).

Details:
This skirt is a quick & easy project. Perfect for beginners and even to teach kids to sew! My girls have already picked a few fat quarters from my stash to make their own skirts!
It features a contrast band at the bottom and an elastic waistband.

This pattern is available in sizes 2-6 years. I made the same size (size 6) for my two girls (5 and 8 years old). You can see that it is a bit tad shorter on my older girl but still acceptable.

The instructions are thorough and easy to follow, with lots of tips along the way.

My girls will be living in these skirts all Summer!

  1. Oh wow Sara! The skirts are gorgeous, As are the models :) I'm so, so glad you got to sew! I know when my kids were smaller I felt the same as you. It's gotten easier lately, but the business of babies can be hard on momma when she needs to be creative for sure! I hope you find a way to do this more often :)

  2. I'm not an expert but I would say you should change your mind and find the pleasure of slow sewings. Now I'm making two flamenco dresses and for sure they aren't quick proyects. They take me two or three months to sew. So I have learnt to love slow sewing as well. You only need to be patience. Just enjoy that little momments of sewing;)
    I love both skirts!
