The Moiano Coat
June 29, 2016
This blog post in a single sentence: I have FINALLY found my go-to pattern for coats!
You have no idea for how long I have been looking for a pattern like this! And the-all-amazing An nailed it! (Thank you An!)
Pattern:
The Moiano Coat by Straight Grain. You can get it here, in both PDF and paper.
Fabric:
I used four diferente fabrics, all from my local fabric shop (Feira dos Tecidos). The white one is cotton piqué, the pink and the navy blue are gabardine, and the lining is a viscose print.
Details:
I have made a fun hack to this pattern: color blocking! The original pattern has only two panels at the front and back: yoke, where the white is, and then main front and main back pieces. I have split these two pattern pieces into two pieces to make the pink & navy color blocking. As for the sleeves, I had to split the pattern piece into three different pieces.
The Moiano is a Spring/Summer coat with lots of options: hood or flat colar, buttons or zipper, welt pockets or patch pockets. Depending on the fabric you use you can get a diferente style: sporty or more vintage/ dress up. This coat is fully lined (thank you!) and you can play with a few optional details: sleeve tabs, back tab, piping, ric rac, etc.
I have opted for: colar, buttons (I modified the button placement, the original pattern has 4 buttons), and skipped the pockets because of the color blocking. But... someone has aready complained, so... I will have to add pockets. Would you say the patch pockets would look good? Color blocked or single color? Or should I just go for some in-seam pockets?
Regarding the colar, you can see that the under piece is showing. It's on purpose! I wanted to add something fun and first I thought about adding piping between the white and pink pieces but then it wouldn't match the sleeves so I went for some faux piping on the colar! I think it turned out a fun detail.
Available sizes: 1 to 12 years.
