June's sewing series, challenges and fun!

May was another great month!
There were a lot of pattern testing again. :) (And I still have to blog most of them...) I haven't managed to join Project Sewn for all the 4 challenges... :( I have met a few amazing sewing bloggers that became my best (sewing) friends! And I hosted my first giveaway! (How exciting!)

Here is this June's calendar of sewing series, challenges, sew-alongs and everything sewing-fun! :)

Serendipity Blouse and Trousers

Few blog posts were so emotional to me as this one. Early this year I came across this pattern testers call by Destri of The Mother Huddle. I immediately responded to the call. I felt so connected to Destri's inspiring story of conquering fear... She had been dreaming, planning and working on her kids clothes pattern line for three years but she wasn't confident enough to go for it for real until now. I could totally relate with her since I have been going through the same doubts and fears about my blog for a few years before I decided to share it and make it known around the online sewing community...
Her answer was just too sweet and I was told I was the first one to answer the tester call.

One of the things I love about this whole online sewing community is the ability to really connect with people and be "friends" with them without having ever met in person. I know this subject of virtual friends would be a topic for a long discussion, but I can tell you that I have made some good friends through this community.

So, back to the topic, I have had the privilege of being part of the launching of this new pattern company - the Sewlosophy pattern co. (Watch this sweet little presentation video here!)
Destri is launching her first kids clothes patterns collection - the Serendipity collection - with a set of 4 patterns for girls: a blouse, trousers & capris, the swing coat and a beret

I was lucky to test both the blouse and the trousers and I have to say that I was truly amazed by these patterns... You won't tell this is Destri's first pattern collection at all. Everything is just perfect. On one hand because of the classic retro feel yet beautiful design of the garments and on the other hand because of the instructions - they are so so great!
The instructions have this neat design, so professional... And Destri is offering a video tutorial for each one of the patterns! Isn't that great? I can tell you that I just felt like I was in her sewing room chating with her about her patterns (only she was doing all the talking, ha!). I saw each video with a cup of tea on my hands before I read the instructions and it was really great to have this overview of the construction of the garment. Destri is such a sweet person and her instructions are very clear and easy to follow.

First let's talk about the Serendipity blouse. I love classic designs as much as I love cutting-edge ones. This blouse is so simple and yet so beautiful. I love the way it closes - with a shoulder placket (for either buttons or snaps).
The pattern doesn't ask for the use of piping but I couldn't help it... :)
I used a cotton batiste fabric with a small flower print. I have to say it was the first time I have used a fabric with yellow on it. Some of you know that yellow it the least of my favorite colors (along with orange, and don't ask me why because I can't find any reasonable explanation...)... But lately I am forcing myself to sew out-of-the-box, to stretch my limits, to try new things - and using yellow fabric or fabric with yellow details on it is part of my sewing goals and I have to say I am about to scratch that from my list! (I have already made something in a bright yellow knit fabric! You can see it here.)
This fabric was given to me by my Portuguese-Canadian aunt (who gave me some beautiful fabrics last year).
I used two lovely vintage buttons with matching colors, from my granny's stash. I think they are just perfect for this blouse.

I was also assigned to test the Serendipity trousers. They have a loose fit on the legs and I like them that way - all I can find in RTW these days are skinny trousers as it is an European fashion trend at the moment. And for as much I love skinny I was happy to make something different.
I love the yoke detail and that the trousers have just the perfect amount of gathering at the front. I also love that they have a elasticized waistband (only at the back) - so no buttons or zippers here.
I used a very lightweight Summer denim cotton and a floral print cotton for the yoke. I have also add a trim to the yoke piece.

I can't wait to make the swing coat and the beret!

May's sewing series and challenges

So, today is Labor Day and I keep thinking about how April was a month so full of non paid work... [lol] It was a crazy month, I have to say... But so joyful!
April was spent on a pattern testing frenzy for several indie designers. I love to test new patterns - it is so much fun and hard work, and I love all the camaraderie around the testing group, oh, and working with a deadline (I always work better under stress...).

It seems like May is going to be a month devoted to some self-care sewing! So many women clothing challenges out there for this month!
Here is the list of May's sewing series, challenges and sew-alongs, for kids clothes, women clothes and other:

Pattern Tour

Willow & Co. - Glamping Tour
Am I missing something? Just let me know!

April's Sew-Alongs, Series & Challenges

2014 is flying! I can't believe the first trimester is already gone!...

March has been a great month. I started a part-time (just 8-16 hours/ week) as a Science teacher at a science center and I still had lots of sewing time! In fact I sewed day and night to keep up with all the pattern testing deadlines I had this month. They are all secret projects for now because I am not allowed to show them until they are released...  I can only tell that there are some great new patterns coming up soon! I can't wait to show you! (OK... I'll post just a sneak-peak of the fabrics I used or some small details this week...)
So, this is why I haven't been much here lately and not showing much of my sewing projects...

Now, let's talk about April's sewing calendar!
April is going to be a month full of sewing events and, again, I am really sad that I don't have enough time to join every single one of them... But I'm sure I 'll join a few. Wanna sew-along? Check this awesome list of sew-alongs, sewing series and challenges - either for women clothes and kids clothes.

The Monthly Stitch - Sewing Double!
"During April it’s time to revisit that favourite pattern and finally make a second one!"

(Ver acima!)

Sew-alongs and Challenges for March

(scroll down for english)

Where did February go? Is March here already?... Are you serious? Next you are going to tell me that Spring is coming soon... Oh, wait! It is coming this month and that is a GOOD thing! Yeah!

My sewing goals for February were almost all accomplished and I am happy with that. 2014 is being a productive year so far and that feels great.

I entered Project Sewn in all 4 challenges (#1#2#3 e #4) which is more than I have thought I could...

I wanted to join The Monthly Stitch challenge for February - Smarty Pants!- but I didn't find the time... I started to sew a self-drafted pattern but I couldn't finish it on time... It is WIP and I am planning to finish it this month.

I am thinking of joining a few kid's clothing sewing series going on in March.
That are several options and I not sure if I will be able to join them all, but here they are just in case you want to join a few too:

There are also a few sew-alongs for women clothing:

Any other sewing series, challenges, sew-alongs going on in March? Let me know!
