Serendipity Blouse and Trousers

Few blog posts were so emotional to me as this one. Early this year I came across this pattern testers call by Destri of The Mother Huddle. I immediately responded to the call. I felt so connected to Destri's inspiring story of conquering fear... She had been dreaming, planning and working on her kids clothes pattern line for three years but she wasn't confident enough to go for it for real until now. I could totally relate with her since I have been going through the same doubts and fears about my blog for a few years before I decided to share it and make it known around the online sewing community...
Her answer was just too sweet and I was told I was the first one to answer the tester call.

One of the things I love about this whole online sewing community is the ability to really connect with people and be "friends" with them without having ever met in person. I know this subject of virtual friends would be a topic for a long discussion, but I can tell you that I have made some good friends through this community.

So, back to the topic, I have had the privilege of being part of the launching of this new pattern company - the Sewlosophy pattern co. (Watch this sweet little presentation video here!)
Destri is launching her first kids clothes patterns collection - the Serendipity collection - with a set of 4 patterns for girls: a blouse, trousers & capris, the swing coat and a beret

I was lucky to test both the blouse and the trousers and I have to say that I was truly amazed by these patterns... You won't tell this is Destri's first pattern collection at all. Everything is just perfect. On one hand because of the classic retro feel yet beautiful design of the garments and on the other hand because of the instructions - they are so so great!
The instructions have this neat design, so professional... And Destri is offering a video tutorial for each one of the patterns! Isn't that great? I can tell you that I just felt like I was in her sewing room chating with her about her patterns (only she was doing all the talking, ha!). I saw each video with a cup of tea on my hands before I read the instructions and it was really great to have this overview of the construction of the garment. Destri is such a sweet person and her instructions are very clear and easy to follow.

First let's talk about the Serendipity blouse. I love classic designs as much as I love cutting-edge ones. This blouse is so simple and yet so beautiful. I love the way it closes - with a shoulder placket (for either buttons or snaps).
The pattern doesn't ask for the use of piping but I couldn't help it... :)
I used a cotton batiste fabric with a small flower print. I have to say it was the first time I have used a fabric with yellow on it. Some of you know that yellow it the least of my favorite colors (along with orange, and don't ask me why because I can't find any reasonable explanation...)... But lately I am forcing myself to sew out-of-the-box, to stretch my limits, to try new things - and using yellow fabric or fabric with yellow details on it is part of my sewing goals and I have to say I am about to scratch that from my list! (I have already made something in a bright yellow knit fabric! You can see it here.)
This fabric was given to me by my Portuguese-Canadian aunt (who gave me some beautiful fabrics last year).
I used two lovely vintage buttons with matching colors, from my granny's stash. I think they are just perfect for this blouse.

I was also assigned to test the Serendipity trousers. They have a loose fit on the legs and I like them that way - all I can find in RTW these days are skinny trousers as it is an European fashion trend at the moment. And for as much I love skinny I was happy to make something different.
I love the yoke detail and that the trousers have just the perfect amount of gathering at the front. I also love that they have a elasticized waistband (only at the back) - so no buttons or zippers here.
I used a very lightweight Summer denim cotton and a floral print cotton for the yoke. I have also add a trim to the yoke piece.

I can't wait to make the swing coat and the beret!

Besos!

The minute I read your about page I thought "Oh! A soul sister!". I love that the internet for that, makes the world a whole lot smaller.
I love what you did with the trousers and blouse (the yoke - my favorite!) and can't wait to see what you do with the coat and beret!

  5. What an awesome pattern collection! I love what you did with both the blouse and pants. The fabric contrast on the pants and cute buttons on the blouse really make the pieces. If I won the collection I'd definitely be looking forward to sewing the pieces one day for my own little girl.

  6. Wow, everything is so beautiful! I love the model of the shirt, the piping and buttons make it look perfect. And the trousers, so adorable - what a brilliant idea use the floral fabric there! I'm very interested seeing how the coat turns out, because I love making coats. If I win I'm going to sew some nice outfit for autumn for my youngest or second youngest daughter.

  7. The patterns are super cute! I love both your pieces, but the pants are especially darling. I looked at the bundle listing and was happy to see so many different looks that can be achieved with the bundle. E doesn't have any wide-leg pants, so I'd probably sew those up first!
